Every guess in Wordle is most valuable when it eliminates the largest number of possible answers — regardless of the result. Think of it less like guessing and more like running experiments.
The concept comes from information theory: a guess that can produce many different colour patterns gives you more "bits" of information about the hidden word. This is why CRANE beats a word like FIZZY — CRANE's common letters produce a wider variety of responses across all possible answers.
Common Letter Patterns to Know
💡 If you identify -IGHT, test multiple openers (L, N, F, M, R, S) in a single guess word rather than guessing one at a time.
💡 Common trap: after finding -OUND, use a word that covers F, M, R, S, B, H, P in one guess.
💡 The CH ending is a strong signal. Focus your guesses on the first two letters.
💡 SH- openers are common. After identifying SH, guess a word that tests A, R, K, V, W, L at once.
5 Mistakes to Avoid
✗ Repeating gray letters
Fix: Once a letter shows gray, it's not in the answer. Never include it in a future guess — you're wasting a valuable guess slot.
✗ Not moving yellow letters
Fix: Yellow means the letter IS in the word, just not there. Players often keep it in the same position by accident. Move it deliberately.
✗ Guessing confirmed words too early
Fix: With 3+ greens showing, resist guessing the first valid word you think of. That guess should still test new letters for the remaining blanks.
✗ Ignoring the word frequency
Fix: Wordle tends to use common everyday words — ABBEY is more likely than ABBOT. Trust your intuition for common vocabulary over rare words.
✗ Starting with a different word every day
Fix: Consistency beats randomness. Mastering the implications of a single great opener (CRANE, SLATE) makes you faster over time.
