Top 10 Starting Words
Covers C, R, A, N, E — all top-10 frequency letters. Arguably the single best opener.
S, L, A, T, E are extremely common. Strong positional coverage for A and E.
Maximum vowel coverage: A, U, D, I, O. Ideal if you want to map all major vowels first.
R, A, I, S, E — five of the six most-common Wordle letters. A fan favourite for good reason.
S and T in strong positions. A and R appear in many Wordle answers.
Anagram of RAISE — same letters, different positional information. Great second choice.
The N gives you information about one of the top-5 most common letters in Wordle answers.
Front-loads vowels to eliminate many common letter combinations early.
Three vowels plus D and R — covers very different territory from CRANE.
S, T, O, R, E are reliable. If you started with CRANE, STORE is an excellent follow-up.
Vowel-Heavy vs. Consonant-Heavy Strategy
🅐 Vowel-Heavy (AUDIO, IRATE)
Identify which vowels are in the answer early. Best when the answer might have 3+ vowels. Risk: fewer common consonants tested in guess 1.
🔤 Balanced (CRANE, SLATE)
Covers both common vowels and high-frequency consonants. Best overall strategy for minimising average guess count across all possible answers.
Second Guess Strategy
Your second guess should cover letters not tested in your first. If you opened with CRANE (C, R, A, N, E), your second word should use completely different letters. Good options include:
- PILOT — P, I, L, O, T (no overlap with CRANE)
- SWIFT — S, W, I, F, T (covers S, W, I, F)
- DUMPY — D, U, M, P, Y (covers uncommon letters for process of elimination)
