MIT researchers utilized a technique called Exact Dynamic Programming to analyze Wordle's 2,315 possible solutions. They discovered that SALET is the absolute most mathematically efficient starting word, resulting in an average of just 3.421 guesses to solve the puzzle.
🤖 NYT WordleBot Efficiency
The New York Times developed an internal tool (WordleBot) that simulates millions of games. For default mode, the WordleBot officially scores SLATE as a 99/100, favoring it over SALET because SLATE is a much more recognizable English word with nearly identical statistical output.
Why Consonants Beat Vowels
Many players mistakenly use vowel-heavy words like AUDIO or ADIEU. While finding vowels is comforting, statistical analysis proves that high-frequency consonants narrow down the remaining word list much faster.
- E and A are essential: They appear in 45% and 39% of Wordle answers respectively, making them the only vowels you truly need in guess one.
- S, R, L, T, N are critical: These consonants eliminate huge clusters of words (e.g., words ending in -ST, -ER, -LE).
